Me: Romans 8:38-39

I love this!
Romans 8:38-39

Boyd Bailey: Love God…

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength”. Deuteronomy 6:5

Why do we love God? We love Him because He commands us to love Him. We love Him because He first loved us. Sacrificially He loved us with the death of His son Jesus. Unconditionally He loves us with the infinite depth of His grace. Comprehension of Christ’s unfailing love compels us to love. “Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2).

It flows from our lips in praise and worship and from a heart of gratitude. Why do we love God? We love Him because we long to obey our Creator. Why do we love God? We love Him because we want to love the One who loves us. His love is irresistible. Like a child responds to a parent’s love, so we long to love our Lord. God created us to love. So to love begins by first loving Him. Your love for others flows from your love for God.

How do you love the Lord? First you give over every thing to Him. “They gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will” (2 Corinthians 8:5b). He desires all of you. This is the Lord’s love language. Specifically you give your heart, mind, will, emotions and spirit to God. Because you love Him, you can trust Him.

You trust Him with your relationships, money, health, career, children and future. When you give Him your worship and praise, you love Him. When you give to others, you love Him. When you give Him credit for your successes in life, you love Him. Love leads to giving. Your gifts to God invite others who want to understand God’s gift of grace.

Indeed, your love of God is a catalyst to draw others to Him. Your love of God solicits questions from a searching world. Questions like, “Why do you love so purely and passionately?” or “Why is your God worthy of such adoration and gratitude?” Then you can let them in on your Savior’s secret. You are able to love Him, because He first loved you. Loving God is job one for the follower of Christ. He expects it and He deserves it. “Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love” (Ephesians 6:4). Do I allow my Heavenly Father to love me thoroughly, so I can love others unconditionally?

Boyd Bailey: Vocational Fulfillment…

“When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned”. Genesis 39:3-4

What brings you fulfillment in your work? Is it the sense of accomplishment? Is it the opportunity to encourage someone? Is it the satisfaction of caring for your family? Is it the sense of security from a steady income stream? Your vocational fulfillment flows from a combination of these characteristics and more. When you are fulfilled in your job you are able to filter through the negatives on the way to the positives.

Be careful not to equate feeling passionate about your position with being fulfilled in your work. Passions ebb and flow around the excitement of a situation, like a start-up when everyone is thinking and working 24/7. But this break neck passionate pace is not sustainable. Your career is a marathon not a sprint. Indeed, if you are absorbed in your work, and not constantly glancing at the clock then perhaps you are in a place of fulfillment.

Is it your sense of control over the outcomes that draws you to serve where you work? You feel empowered, you are able to expand your skills and you can make a meaningful contribution in your community as a parent or an employee. Vocational fulfillment flows from a heart engaged in a mission that means something to you and to the Lord.

If Christ has placed you where you are, can you be content to serve Him wholeheartedly? The Almighty’s vocational assignment carries its own sense of satisfaction. Joseph found favor because God placed him in his leadership role. In the same way use your workplace platform as a launching pad for the Lord. Your ability to support others, offer promotions and create a caring culture facilitates fulfillment for everyone.

Vocational fulfillment is a faith journey that brings out the best in you and those around you. God blesses the work He assigns. Have you accepted the Lord’s assignment? “From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph” (Genesis 39:5a). What brings me fulfillment in my job? How can I help others find fulfillment in their work?

The Daily Verse: James 1:22

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

James 1:22

One of the most damaging ways you can portray Christianity to non-believers and believers alike, is to be a hearer (and a repeater) of the Word but not be a doer of the Word. Make every effort today to let your actions speak the Gospel. Love others well. Treat yourself and others with respect. Love God. Don't just talk about it, but do it.

The Daily Verse: Psalm 23:4,5***

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Psalm 23:4,5

Even when things feel really freaked out in life, God is present with us. He protects and comforts us; He also intends to bless us beyond our need. If times are tough, evaluate your willingness to receive. Encourage yourself to be willing and open to letting Him protect, comfort and bless you in your time of need.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9
Doing good can take a toll on the heart, mind and spirit when we meet resistance. Don't give up. Surrender to Him each element of what you're putting your hand to and let God guide and sustain you each step of the way.

The Daily Verse: Isaiah 29:15

Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, Who sees us? Who knows us?
Isaiah 29:15
There is no need to hide from God, even if you do sin or do something that you know you should not have. He loves you and He is willing to forgive you. Besides, why try to hide from God when He knows everything to begin with? Let Him teach and comfort you even in the humanness of your nature.

The Daily Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18**

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
The command "pray without ceasing" has always intimidated me, considering it's literally hard to be talking to one person (God) and another person (colleague, friend, etc.). However, what if we consider that each and every action that we're doing in response to how God has hard-wired us with our gifts, talents and anointing is an act of prayer unto Him? Consider that perspective as you work, communicate and interact with people today - let your every action be an outpouring of yourself unto God's service, doing what He's created you for.

The Daily Verse: Luke 12: 35,36

Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.
Luke 12: 35,36
There is a difference between being busy doing the Lord's work and being attentive to the Lord's voice. If you find yourself so entrenched in the work that you put your hands to that you find yourself spending less time listening for guidance and direction from Him - take a breather. Be intentional about slowing yourself down. Look, listen and respond to divine guidance, not just your own personal motivation so that you're not working in vain only to be weary and ineffective but rather with purpose that will bear fruit beyond what our human hands can produce.

Boyd Bailey: Spiritual Receptivity…

“Then Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Mark 4:9

Spiritual receptivity is necessary for the growing follower of Christ. Jesus knew that there had to be a willingness to want to know and understand before there could be any comprehension of His teachings. This hunger for God is an innate appetite that only He can satisfy. Even if you don’t hear, you can want to hear. This is the attitude of a growing disciple of Jesus Christ. A willing heart is what the Holy Spirit infuses with insight.

Spiritual receptivity is born out of your attitude and validated by your actions. Actions can be an indicator but not an initiator of openness to the Almighty’s agenda. Have you ever grown weary working for the Lord, struggling to have a patient attitude? Yes, we all do from time to time, but it’s a patient and grateful attitude that hears Christ communicate the most clearly. Gratitude for His grace, love and forgiveness leads to hearing His voice.

His word lodges alive and eventually bears fruit when the ears of your heart humbly listen to the Lord with an attitude of obedience. Jesus explained the results of a spiritually receptive heart, hearing and understanding His word, thus finding faith and healing. Indeed, the comprehension of His ways are not limited to a select few “professional Christians”. In fact, their ministry vocation can become a stumbling block to belief.

“For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. 'But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it” (Matthew 13:15-17).

Spiritual receptivity means I submit to the Holy Spirit’s prodding to preempt my pride. Instead of reacting to raw data, I wait and process with prayer so I am able to gain God’s perspective and not be rushed by the world’s way of doing things. Spiritual receptivity sees the face of God and hears the heart of heaven. Do I hear with a heart toward hearing from heaven? Is my heart humbled to hear from the Holy Spirit? “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).

Boyd Bailey: Audience of One…

Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that man gets justice.” Proverbs 29:26

For what audiences do you find yourself performing? Is it an athletic audience assembled to cheer you on with passionate pleas? Or are you on the stage at work or home doing your best to remember your role and not forget to speak your lines of encouragement and correction? Wherever you serve on life’s stage, there is the pressure to perform. You are saved by grace, but we feel accepted by performance. But many audiences bring little peace.

When driven by the fear of man, the pressure to perform steals your peace of mind. “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Proverbs 29:25). In performance based relationships you can never do enough to please a perfectionist. You are caught in the crazy cycle of striving to please someone who can’t be pleased. After exhausting yourself to meet their expectations you have to stop to honestly evaluate the outcome.

Who do I really want to please? Who is my audience? Almighty God is your audience of one. You look above the heads of mighty men on earth and focus on the face of Jesus in heaven. Is He smiling? Is He applauding? Is He happy? How freeing and refreshing to know you ultimately answer to your Creator, your Savior and the Lover of your soul. People are the Lord’s pawns to carry out His purposes. You may plea before authorities and receive an apathetic response, but when you pray before Jesus He is just and He cares.

Therefore, seek the favor of your Savior. Set eternal expectations and you will not be disappointed. Regardless of where you live, work or play, He is the one and only audience for which it matters how you perform. “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast” (Psalm 139:7-10). Am I enamored only by eternal applause? Do I trust the Lord with His right results?

The Daily Verse: Romans 12:19

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," says the Lord.
Romans 12:19
Instead of brooding about those who have wronged you and how you want to get them back, leave it at the foot of the cross. God's justice is much more intimidating to your enemies than your own ideas of paybacks - so turn it over to Him to make right. Let God deal with things for you and move along so that you're focusing on the present, not the past.

The Daily Verse: Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22
You, the righteous, will not be moved - not because you're weighed down by your own burdens, but because Christ is your foothold. Don't carry what isn't yours to carry - it is unnecessary and distracting from what He's got you here for.

The Daily Verse: Matthew 19:24

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.
Matthew 19:24
Material things and the continuous longing and search for them can be a distraction from what is really important. With society's bent toward instant gratification, wealth and technology, a lot of times we can forget what really matters. Remember to keep it simple - be sure you're focusing more on eternal things than the tangible things in front of you that aren't.

Boyd Bailey: Walk In Wisdom…

“He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.” Proverbs 28:26

What does it mean to walk in wisdom? The contrast is to run ahead of the Lord irresponsibly or to lag behind Him in fear. We walk in wisdom when we wait on Christ’s command and walk with Him by faith. There is a peace and confidence when we walk lock step with the Lord. Indeed, avoid the world’s wisdom, embrace God’s and you will come to know Him and His ways. “For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe” (1 Corinthians 1:21).

Those who walk in wisdom recognize the foolishness of self-trust. Many times there has already been the pain of walking through life without the Lord and the sad experience of self-destructive behavior. Walking alone through life leads to loneliness, feeling lost and a solitary soul. Fools flounder for lack of friends and direction, however the wise are surrounded with mentors and godly guides who protect them from themselves.

“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20). Who do you walk with day in and day out, on the job and away from work? Does your spouse trust those with whom you spend your free time? Are your influencers at work men and women of impeccable integrity? It’s walking with the wise that brings you wisdom and discernment. Wisdom surrounds itself with those who will say to you what you don’t want to hear. Wise friends are not afraid to tell you the truth.

Therefore, shun self-reliance and instead rely on the wisdom of the Lord and His godly followers. Ask your parents what they think. Many times He gives them a unique and accurate assessment of your needs because of their God given authority in your life. Trust in self is a slippery slope into insignificance, but trust in the Lord grows your wisdom and expands your influence. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT). Do I prayerfully walk in wisdom as my regular routine in life?

The Daily Verse: Colossians 3:14

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
Colossians 3:14
Putting on love doesn't always look rosy and pretty. Putting on love might mean sacrificing, or it might mean making decisions that aren't easy. When faced with a choice today, run your decision through the filter of "what shows unconditional love?" - and then act upon it. You'll be thankful in the long run.

The Daily Verse: Philippians 2:4 (awesome)

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4
Notice that this says "...not only to your own interests," - so that doesn't mean be a doormat and let people walk all over you. Make note of the balanced encouragement here - consider the interests of others around you - definitely be a servant and kindhearted, but don't forget that if you're not taking care of you, it's going to be harder to be at your best so you can serve others.

Boyd Bailey: Emotional Intelligence…

“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.” Proverbs 27:23

We all have a “flock” we care for and nurture. Perhaps it’s your family that sees you as the shepherd to help move everyone in the right direction. You may find yourself the undesignated team leader at work where other team members respect your judgment and decision-making. Or, you have a small group of friends who default to your influence when faced with uncertainty. Wherever you find your flock it’s wise to really know them.

Shepherding relationships takes a ton of time and discernment. Individuals are wired differently, so it’s important to know what motivates them. Introverts may need quality conversation and extroverts continual encouragement. The insecure need confidence and the secure need accountability. Take the time to understand the fears, hopes and dreams of those you serve. Your emotional intelligence grows when you dare to care.

The temptation of leaders is to disconnect from their emotional intelligence. However, emotionally disengaged leaders miss half the leadership equation. The “science” of leadership is analysis and problem solving. The “art” of leadership is motivation and relational understanding. If you are just logical you can forget to love well by discerning what people are feeling. Facts travel down the tracks of feelings that result in action.

So begin with a personal emotional assessment. Use your own emotional understanding as a baseline for engaging others. Pray for others and you will begin to feel their pain and their pride of work. Emotionally mature leaders learn to ask many more questions and offer fewer answers. Understand your flocks and then lead them to discover their needs. Do I take the time to be a student of those I serve? Do I connect with them on an emotional level? “Live with your wives in an understanding way” (1 Peter 3:7 NASB).
