Boyd Bailey: Depend on God…

“I am the vine you are the branches. If a man remains in me, and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

What does it mean to depend on God, and do I daily practice dependency? It is faith and confidence in Christ, but sometimes it is a struggle to see, because dependence is deployed from our soul and spirit. It seems easier to depend on the Lord when disease deteriorates the body, than when anger allies with my attitude. Dependence on God means we need Him, and we understand that without Him we are unable to accomplish anything of Kingdom significance. Reliance on Jesus is the door to faithful and fruitful living. It means we are transformed by what the Lord says and thinks; therefore we can depend on Him for wisdom and insight. Perhaps, He will guide you over the next year to pay down debt, decrease spending, and increase saving and giving. Indeed, we can depend on Him for the fruit of frugality and generosity. Dependence on the Lord deepens your determination, broadens your resources, and grows your character.

Moreover, another reason you depend on the Lord is because you feel the pressure of others depending on you. You can crumble under the expectations of people, unless you have the inner strength of your Savior to sustain you. Like a branch draws sap from the vine for sustenance, so He energizes you for sustainability. Dependence is a continual connection to Christ that results in a harvest of holiness. Pride is purged away, and humility grows in its place. Fear is purged away, and faith grows in its place. Anger is purged away, and forgiveness grows in its place. Lust is purged away, and love grows in its place. We depend on God because we are desperate and detached without Him. Dependence starts by acknowledging Almighty God as the owner of everything, and the controller of every circumstance. Nothing is impossible with God, and everything is within His reach. Your part is to trust and obey, and His part is to do the rest. Dependency depends on Him working in and through you. The Bible says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10, NKJV).

Boyd Bailey: Leaders Learn…

“Say to wisdom, ‘You are my sister, and call understanding your kinsman…” Proverbs 7:4

Leaders are learners, and when they stop learning they cease to lead wisely. Education is an enlightened envoy for leaders who think ahead and who are engaged in effective execution. If a leader does not assess the facts of a situation and operate in reality, he loses any advantage he might possess. Circumspect living is the life of a leader who is ever learning. He or she continually asks questions like, “How can we better understand what the customer wants and needs?” How can I get out of the way as the leader, and support the team to be successful?” How can our organization go from good to great by integrating and sustaining industry best practices?” Leaders that learn, ask the right questions, get the most accurate answers, and are able to make the wisest decisions.

Furthermore, leaders learn by listening to the Lord, and to the wisdom found in His Word. Indeed, it is not a one time educational event, but the ongoing purging of pride, pretense and prayerlessness. Wisdom becomes a beloved sister whom you go to for counsel, and humility grows into a trusted friend with whom you can confide. The Holy Bible is your defense and armor against the assault of unwise thinking. Therefore read, study and apply the Word of God regularly to your life. Read books that brings out bright examples of other leaders worth emulating. Learn by listening to teachers who communicate truth with clarity and conviction. Learn from your mistakes and do not repeat them. Learn forgiveness from your family, service from your friends and love from your enemies. Above all, learn to be like Jesus, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose” (Philippians 2:1-2).

Boyd Bailey: Disciplined Disciple…

“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.” I Corinthians 9:25

Discipline is a prerequisite for a disciple of Jesus Christ. A wise disciplined person knows how to stay focused on what’s most important, and trusts that other urgent matters will take care of themselves in the right time. Paul uses the illustration of athletic training to motivate us to discipline. A compelling motivation for the athlete is the reward at the end. The reward at the finish line makes worthwhile the sometimes-painful workout process and regimented routine. This is why we memorize scripture now, for wisdom later. We exercise now, for energy later. We rise early now in prayer, for peace later. We give generously now, for rewards later. Discipline in the now creates benefits for the future.

Discipline becomes a habit of life when there are clearly defined goals and steps to achieve them. Discipline provides laser beam focus thorough structure and accountability. However, it is not all altruistic. There is progress and fruit along the way to enjoy. You feed discipline when you are able to enjoy its fruit with like-minded friends. Disciplined people infect others to discipline. Surround yourself with people of discipline and you will become better disciplined. A parent, friend, mentor, teacher and other role models can coach and encourage you through a disciplined process. Disciples are disciplined and people who are disciplined can be effective disciples of Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Boyd Bailey: Worth the Wait…

“Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ.” Luke 2:25-26

The first Christmas was an exercise in waiting for God, as His people had been anticipating the arrival of Messiah for hundreds of years. They longed and looked for their Lord to come as a sovereign ruler and king, but instead God’s son entered earth in a humble manger, secured by a simple stable. His parents were not royal or regal, but righteous, and a little rough around the edges. The ethos of Jesus’ birth was unexpected, but He arrived at just the right time to redeem the souls of men. The Bible says, “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His son, born of a woman, born under the law…”(Galatians 4:4, NKJV). God is worth the wait, because He is never late, but seldom is He early. What are you waiting for right now? A job? A wedding? A class? Forgiveness? Peace? Love? Whatever your situation, wait for the Lord to lead you into His opportunities, and by faith you will find fulfillment. Waiting for God is worthwhile.

God is worth the wait, because He gets you to where you need to be, without relying on the delay of human hassle. People are pawns in the hand of Providence; so do not trust in them for peace or progress. God will bring just the right relationships and resources into place in His perfect timing. Trust Him to be your provision, for He will provide what you need in the nick of time. You can stare down fear by the inner strength of the Holy Spirit. Confide in Christ as your confidant, and He will counsel you in the wise way to walk. Wait for God’s best, and in retrospect you will have no regrets. Look for Him in humble people and simple situations, as pride and sin seem to over-complicate circumstances. Jesus was worth the wait at His first coming, and He will be worth the wait at His second coming. In the meantime practice His presence in the present. Prayerfully follow the Holy Spirit’s leading during times of waiting, and you will walk in the ways of the wise. The Bible says this about a saint who profoundly understood waiting for God, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in His time, Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9).

The word that really sticks out to me in the words above is pawn! In the last few months it's come to my attention life is very much like playing checkers or chess! Playing checkers is very fun, but easy. Every once in a while you get a chance to make a big move, but for the most part it's one jump at a time in a straight line.

Now, on the other hand when you play chess it takes some thought, skill, patience and experience. The more you play the better you get and realize the there is strategy involved in success. You have to look ahead and run though multiple complex steps at once. LIFE!

So, back to the entry above. I know that BB was not using the word pawn in this way, but it fits for me! I'm the pawn and GOD is the Queen—the most power piece on the board!

Boyd Bailey: Christ in Christmas…

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11

Christ in Christmas is like memorial in Memorial Day, mother in Mother’s Day, father in Father’s Day, labor in Labor Day, independence in Independence Day, and thanksgiving in Thanksgiving Day. However, it cheapens His significance to compare God sending His son to earth equally with other holiday celebrations. Indeed, He is the reason for the season. He is the explanation for eternal life. He is the answer from Almighty God for grace and truth incarnate. He is the beginning and the end, and a bright light in the darkest darkness. He is our hope on earth, as we prepare for our home in heaven. If Christ is not in Christmas then churches can convert to corporate offices, and missions can morph into humanitarian agencies. Christ in Christmas creates a tension for those who have yet to trust, but to us who have been saved it is the most significant celebration.

Christ in Christmas means you live for a purpose much grander than merchandise and commerce. Your children have a legacy of love for God and country, and service to others. You work as unto the Lord, and you give generously out of gratitude for God’s bountiful blessings. Christ in Christmas motivates you to live like you were dying, and to die like you were living, all in a spirit of faith, hope and love. By God’s grace you create a worldview populated by precious people and full of exciting opportunities, while on guard in prayerful discernment to Satan’s schemes and evil’s deceptive intentions. Christ in Christmas compels you to exclaim, ‘He was born, so we would believe; He died, so we would live; He rose, so we would rise!’ Therefore, in humility and with pride, boldly keep Christ in Christmas. His birth is your excuse to brag on Jesus. The Bible says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Boyd Bailey: Expecting Wife…

“He [Joseph] went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:5-7

An expecting wife needs extra sensitivity, and a strong supportive husband. She is emotionally vulnerable, and physically overwhelmed at times. As with Mary, there may be some uncertainty of the ultimate outcome, but she trusts the Lord to care for her and her baby. The circumstances are challenging when you are away from the comforts of home and its familiar feel. Husbands, your expecting wife needs you to step up like Joseph and provide leadership. This is not the time to lose faith, or become frightened. Perfect love casts out fear, so overcome any apprehensions with the Christ-like love that dwells in your mind and heart. See pregnancy as a prayerful process to accomplish the plan of Almighty God, as expecting moms and dads can expect great things from Him.

Lastly, a husband’s leadership needs to provide protection for his wife. Accompany her, as Joseph did, to new places and people who might take advantage of your sweet spirited spouse. It makes your woman feel safe and secure when you buffer her from bad people, or strangers with unseemly motives. Stay with her, and see her through stressful situations. Your protective leadership may need to be applied to immediate family members who mistreat her. Intervene and defend your wife if your children, parents or siblings show disrespect, however subtle it might be. God, in marriage, made you one flesh, so if she is offended, you are offended. Of course prayerfully confront all parties in a spirit of grace and humility, but with clarity. An expecting wife is beautiful to behold, as she brings forth an innocent infant woven in her womb by God. Be there for her labor of love for the Lord, and for His gift of a precious little one to love. The Bible says, “The LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).

Boyd Bailey: Bold Humility…

“My son if you have put up security for your neighbor… Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids, free yourself…” Proverbs 6:1a, 3b-4

It is hard to manage our own debt obligations, much less the debt commitment of another. Therefore, wisdom says to free yourself from financial surety, so you are free to serve. It is not smart to co-sign credit on behalf of another, if you do, make plans to pay what’s due. Or in bold humility go to the one for whom you partnered or co-signed, and ask them if you can get out from under the financial obligation. Even if you pay a penalty for backing out, what price can you pay for your newfound peace of mind? Financial over extension is unwise, so perhaps you consolidate your credit, and make a bold plan to pay down your personal debt. Debt reduction is smart, especially during recessionary times.

The “borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7), so in humility and boldness you can break the chain of financial servitude. The Bible says, “You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men” (I Corinthians 7:23). It is counter cultural to limit credit, or abolish it all together. Why make credit convenient to a spender who struggles to stay within a budget? Therefore, apply discipline and sacrifice, and you can experience the peaceful result of debt free living. Perhaps in bold humility you ask your parents to match every dollar you pay toward debt reduction. One last word related to co-signing. There may be a young person who needs someone to vouch for his or her character and credit. Like the apostle Paul guaranteed the servant Onesimus’ repayment, you may be led to do the same for someone. Perhaps you ultimately see your assistance as a gift, so if you are paid back it is an unexpected bonus. Regardless manage expectations with prayerful prudence and bold humility. Relationships are much more valuable than cash. Paul said, “If then you consider me a partner and a comrade in fellowship, welcome and receive him as you would [welcome and receive] me. And if he has done you any wrong in any way or owes anything [to you], charge that to my account. I, Paul, write it with my own hand, I promise to repay it [in full]…” (Philemon 1:17-19a, Amplified Bible).

Boyd Bailey: God Blessed Home…

“The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.” Proverbs 3:33

What type of home does the Lord bless? He blesses a home that trusts Him, and does right, as God defines right. A home that prioritizes the implementation of heaven’s agenda on earth, He blesses. A home that builds up, rather than tears down, He blesses. A home that humbly reads Scripture together, and seeks to personally apply its truth, He blesses. A home that prays together, plays together, worships together and serves together, He blesses. “God bless our home” is a wise prayer for a family of faith. Even if your home is more like hell than heaven, you can still make a significant difference. Let your light of love shine in service to undeserving family members, and your Heavenly Father will draw them unto Himself. God blesses a home shingled with unselfish service.

You may be the spiritual leader of the home, but you do not have the confidence to lead in religious matters. There is stll hope. First of all, keep it simple by spending individual time alone with the Lord. Take what He is teaching you in His word, and transfer it to your family. If you are learning humility, read a Bible verse about the humble, and share a recent humbling experience from your life. God blesses a leader in the home who is authentic and transparent. Family members can relate to your real struggles, instead of perceived perfection. The home is heaven’s hospital for healing, encouragement and accountability. Make Christianity work at home, and then you have the creditability of a God blessed model to export it into the church and community. Christ shows contempt for the house of sinners, but blesses the home of wise saints. The Bible says, “By wisdom a house is built, and though understanding it is established” (Proverbs 24:3).

Boyd Bailey: Walking Wisely…

“Thus you will walk in the ways of good men, and keep to the paths of the righteous.” Proverbs 2:20

Walking wisely means you keep company with those who love and obey Christ. They are your influencers, because their values reflect the route you want to take in life. There is an alignment of purpose with people who pray together on behalf of the greater good of God’s Kingdom. So in college, walk with the crowd who is all about character building, service to others, studies, love for the Lord and obedience to His commands. At work, prayerfully partner with those who are principled in their business philosophy. Someone may have less skill and experience, but you can trust their heart to do what they say they will do. Moreover, do not negotiate with mediocre living, as it is distasteful in the mouth of your Master, Jesus. Instead walk with those who raise you to righteous living.

Of course, you are to reach out and care for sinners, but with the purpose of loving them to the Lord. God has placed you in the life of unbelievers to influence them toward heaven. Perhaps one day they will thank you for your patience and prayers. Walking wisely means you learn to do well by being with those who aspire intimacy with the Almighty. You walk with the ones who obey the One. Furthermore, your family may need you to slow down, because you have run so far ahead they are unable to keep up and benefit from your presence. Walk with your sons and daughters while you can. Your leadership at work will advance in significance when all your team walks with you in focus. Above all else, walk with the Lord and He will give you wisdom and insight into who to walk with and where. “This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it’ (Jeremiah 6:16).

Boyd Bailey: Discretion’s Protection…

“Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.” Proverbs 2:11

Discretion arms us against evil, and all matters of temptation. It is a God inspired ability to wisely choose between good and bad, and between better and best. Leaders may recognize this trait in you as they did Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you are” (Genesis 41:39). So stay humble if heaven has graced you with insight in what needs to be done. Others are more apt to receive your instructions if it is delivered in a trustworthy tone, and with a teachable spirit. Don’t allow your overconfidence to forget Christ and fuel jealousy in the insecure. Use your discretion for the good of the entire enterprise. It is meant to be a protector, not a pass for pride to wreak havoc. Discretion is a sentinel for your soul’s care and welfare.

Furthermore, use discretion with sensitive information, as your position of influence is to protect innocent parties, and not cause unnecessary chaos. For example, instead of embarrassing someone in front of the group for their incompetency, talk with them alone in a spirit of collaborative correction. You can protect the reputation of a team member, and still experience excellent outcomes within the organization. Make sure to move discretion from your head to your heart, so insights are communicated with grace and clarity. Ultimately it is at God’s discretion, as it relates to opportunities and results. So seek His face by faith to learn how to protect and progress in His will. The Bible says, “For his God instructs and teaches him properly” (Isaiah 28:26, NASB).

Boyd Bailey: Knowledge of God…

“If you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God”. Proverbs 2:4-5

The knowledge of God is obtained by the wisdom of God, and the wisdom of God is found in the word of God. Jesus is the “Word”, so when we see Him, we not only see our Savior, but our God. Jesus became flesh and walked among us so He could, among other things, teach us the knowledge of God. So read the ‘red letters’ in the gospel’s of Christ, and you will observe the knowledge of God lived out in your Lord, and you will learn obedience by understanding and applying His teachings. Obtaining and integrating the knowledge of God into life transformation is not a passive exercise. It comes from passionate prayer, and earnestly seeking to understand the words written in red. Knowledge of God is food that satisfies the soul. It is a divine diet of grace and truth.

“Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation” (I Peter 2:2). You read and receive the ‘Word of God’, so you can be transformed by the knowledge of God. Wisdom is a way to knowing God. It is discovered through toil and trust, industry and intimacy, and hard work and heaven’s illumination. Like the precious metals of silver and gold, the knowledge of God is found by the discipline and determination of digging out truth that may be covered over by the dirt of unbelief. You rise up early so you can meditate in the ‘mine shaft’ with your master Jesus, and He shows you the way. As you humbly receive the knowledge of God, make known to others the richness of your discovery. Wisdom is to be invested, by faith, in others for the sake of God’s Kingdom. Therefore, start by being the spiritual leader of your family, the Bible says, “Then on the second day the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered to Ezra the scribe that they might gain insight into the words of the law” (Nehemiah 8:13, NASB).

Boyd Bailey: Attention To Details…

“Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him.” Acts 12:8

Almighty God is in the details, because He knows the details define a clear path for His will. Like Peter His angel has to sometimes shake us up out of the slumber of our sleepy self. We can nap in our pitiful prison of fear and forget God is still at work. He wants us to welcome His sudden shake up, so we can see Christ’s course for our life more clearly. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is shifting us so we will see the details of what He is doing. When Christ crashes into our circumstances it is certainly wise to wake up and wonder what He is doing. Pay attention to the His work around you, and listen to the Lord’s leading. The smile of an infant may be just the small sign you need that shows He is pleased with you.

Jesus gives attention to details in your life because He cares. He cares if you have a career you are passionate about. He cares if your son or daughter gets into the school of their first choice. He cares if you make it through financial chaos to a cash position that is calm and predictable. So look for the Lord in the details of your everyday life, and thank Him for His great love. Praise Him when He gives you perception into solving problems and understanding people. Furthermore, slow down and take the time to engage in the details of the people’s passions around you. It honors them when you can ask intelligent questions that communicate you care and understand. God’s got the details covered, so seek Him first for His discernment and He will lead you through every important step along the way. However, don’t drown in the details, but stay moving behind Him for the results. The Bible says, “In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to its specifications. He had spent seven years building it” (I Kings 6:38).

Boyd Bailey: Complacency Kills…

For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them, but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” Proverbs 1:32

Complacency is a killer because it doesn’t care. It kills outcomes, because it doesn’t care about excellent execution. It kills relationships, because it doesn’t care about investing in the good of another. It kills finances, because it doesn’t care if spending drifts into irresponsible expenditures. It kills life, because it doesn’t care if lethargic living leads to premature death. However, Christ-centered living kills complacency, because Jesus is full of life, opportunity and possibilities. Christians are called to initiate and engage in intimacy with the Almighty. There is a divine drive and determination to do good for God. Complacency kills, but Christ gives life and safety, without fear of harm.

You may find yourself in a funk, captured by frail faith and unable to move forward even moderately. You may be asking, ‘Is it even worth another try?’ And the answer is yes, so get up and get going with God! Kill complacency by courting Christ and His agenda for your life. The Lord cares about where you are going and how you will get there. Don’t be overwhelmed by a mountain of unanswered questions. Just take the first step of faith with your Heavenly Father. Complacency cannot co-exist with Christ. Your Savior will safely guide you to your next goal. Pity parties are for the complacent, however celebratory parties are for those compelled by Christ. The wise run to serve the Lord, while fools rush in to sit and soak. Through trust in Jesus become a complacent killer, as hope takes no prisoners of pity. The Bible says, “At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, 'The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad’ (Zephaniah 1:12).

Boyd Bailey: Benefits Of Repentance…

“If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.” Proverbs 1:23

There are benefits that belong to real repentance. When you and I respond to correction in humility and teachability, we are in a position to be blessed by wisdom. Another’s rebuke causes our pride to bristle, but defensiveness is not where wisdom resides. Wisdom is attracted to the man or woman who comes clean with their sins and shortcomings. It is when our spouse or supervisor uncovers inconsistencies in our words and actions that we are wise to listen and learn. Even when someone rebukes us with raw emotion, we are to receive it and repent of our wrong. Moreover, pray for messengers with mixed motives, and the Almighty with give them the necessary attitude adjustment. Your part is to repent and trust Him with the rest. Indeed, God’s reveals His heart to those responsive to rebuke.

Lastly, repentance is a racetrack for wisdom, as it traffics on the streets of a soul who continually turns to Christ, and turns away from man-centered methods. The world’s standards may allow you to attack an antagonist, but not Jesus. The confrontation of a friend or enemy is a crossroad for Christ’s wisdom. Instruction is an ally that grows your understanding of, and intimacy with Almighty God. So seek out the mature of faith, and give them permission to encounter any erroneous actions in your life. For example, once you are aware of a dishonorable or disrespectful attitude, by God’s grace replace it with honor and respect. Perhaps you invite a money management expert to provide you wisdom and accountability in financial stewardship, or ask a seasoned couple to mentor you and your spouse in marriage. God trusts the teachable with His thoughts. Therefore, listen and learn from the Lord and others, ask them to guide you in wisdom. The Bible says, “Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble” (Proverbs 4:10-12).

Boyd Bailey: Leaders of Integrity…

“But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.” Exodus 18:21

Leaders of integrity are a rare breed within a group of citizens whose utmost concern is, “What is in it for me?” A selfish society does not always select a leader for their integrity, but for their ability to manipulate a quick fix for chronic problems. It is this short sightedness that can set back a generation, because of their leaders' greed and corruption. However, men and women of integrity understand the big picture of principled leadership, and they value a fear of God, trustworthiness and honest economics. A leader of integrity looks out over the long term, and discovers what is best for the culture, its citizens, churches and families. There is a resolve to do the right things, with the right people, for the right reasons. Leaders of integrity integrate integrity by their influence.

Therefore, select capable men and women who hold Christ and His commands in high esteem, who you can trust to do and say the right things, implemented in the right way. Leaders of integrity surround themselves with other leaders of integrity. There is a high standard in their selection of leaders, because they want to represent the people extremely well. Competence and character is valued over loyal but incompetent friends with suspicious standards of behavior. A leader of integrity does delegate, but only to those who are unquestionably capable. So, select your leaders in government and church, prayerfully, and only after extensive due diligence of their policies, integrity and track record. Blindly betting on one person is a bad process. Instead, select statesmen who will serve the people in the best interests of the country, who will surround themselves with the best and the brightest, full of character, and most importantly, choose those who will submit to the accountability of God and man. The early church experienced a similar selection process of leaders, “Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word (Acts 6:3-4)”.

Boyd Bailey: Keep Learning…

“... let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance…” Proverbs 1:5

Wise men and women are lifetime learners. The knowledge and understanding that served us well last year will not be sufficient for next year. It is what we are learning today that prepares us for tomorrow. Wisdom and discernment listen and learn. They listen to people around them and learn what to do, and what not to do. Another’s tragedy can be an unfortunate teacher of what decisions to avoid. When you see the decision to use debt irresponsibly destroy a family, you learn the discipline of saving. Another’s triumph’s can be a fortunate teacher of what choices to embrace. The sacrifice of a mom who stays home to serve her family increases the probability of children with character. You listen and learn from her how to love little ones to love Jesus, so keep learning.

Your counsel increases in value, as you grow in wisdom and discernment. Lazy learners are left to be by themselves. It is a life that learns that others desire learning. So seek out a mentor who models learning, whom you can weekly meet to challenge your assumptions. Invite your mentor to question your answers more than answer your questions. Oral learning through the exchange of ideas unlocks and applies wisdom. You are positioned to learn in an audience of one with gray hair. Lastly, learn by submission to God and His word. A humble life can be trusted with God’s wisdom, and the Holy Spirit’s discernment. It is out of your compassion and mercy that knowledge is converted to wisdom. Keep learning and the Lord will lift you to new levels of influence, stop learning and you will lower into irrelevance. Learning expands your Kingdom effectiveness and deepens your character. The Bible says, “Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning” (Proverbs 9:9).

Boyd Bailey: No Struggles…

“They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills.” Psalm 73:4-5

Having no struggles at all will never happen in this lifetime. Non-existent struggles are not possible, until you graduate to heaven’s struggle-less environment with your Savior. The nice and the naughty alike struggle, though outwardly they may seem void of vexation. The righteous and the wicked both struggle in varying degrees. No one is exempt from struggles. Yes, there may be seasons of minimal conflict; however struggles are on the way. You are either struggling, about to struggle or have just finished struggling. Indeed, everyone from monks to the mafia struggle. Therefore, don’t spend your life trying to insulate yourself from struggles. The Bible teaches, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

You will stress out more from trying to avoid struggles, than you will from accepting their reality. This is not to say God would have us solicit struggles into our life. But He does understand that struggles are meant to send us to Him. Struggles look for a Savior, and Jesus is our friend in our fight against struggles. Moreover, envy can erode your eternal perspective by giving you a false impression of others who seem to live life without struggles. This is inaccurate and ill-conceived. No amount of money or power can completely drive struggles from someone’s life. In fact, it may compound struggles because of the complexity of choices that are created. Someone’s large amount of discretionary time may on the surface seem like they are without struggles, but they are not. There are still the internal struggles of sin and self against God’s best. And there are the external struggles created by other people’s choices and circumstances that are out of your control. Struggles send you to prayer for others. Paul requested this: “I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me” (Romans 15:30).

I'm currently struggling with, this hot topic, right now in my life. For me, the most powerful thought in this posting is: You will stress out more from trying to avoid struggles, than you will from accepting their reality.

I have to learn to except the reality and deal rather then avoiding at all cost.

Boyd Bailey: Emotional Emptiness…

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life”. Proverbs 4:23

Emotional emptiness is a set up for frustrated and insecure living. If I ignore my emotional bank account with bad behavior, I can easily become overdrawn and withdraw into my silent shell. There are ‘late fees’ that result in broken promises, missed appointments, and angry outbursts. Emotional emptiness easily leads to chronic exhaustion. Bad emotions like unresolved anger overcome those running on emotional empty, in addition good things like serving others can suck the joy and gratitude from your life if you are not emotionally whole. Resentment runs rampant when your emotions are on the edge of emptiness, so guard your heart with the Holy Spirit’s help and wisdom.

So how do you know if you are approaching emotional emptiness? And if you are emotionally spent how do you replenish your emotional bank account? One sign of emotional fatigue is when your feelings are easily hurt. You take too much personally without appropriating forgiveness and trust in the Lord’s ability to handle the situation, so invite God to grow your character during challenging times. One way to involve Jesus in your emotional barrenness is to write out your fears, and talk it through with the one whom you totally trust. He will give you courage to encounter those you fear with humility and courage. Lastly, make regular appointments with encouragers who lift you to the Lord with their affirmation and prayers, and who remind you to place your hope in heaven. Emotional fullness is created in a prayerful pace of living. Protect your emotions as they give understanding and insight into yourself, people and the Lord. Above all else, trust in the peace of God to make whole your emotions, and to guard your heart. The Bible says, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

Boyd Bailey: Glad in God…

“Let Israel rejoice in the their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King.” Psalm 149:2

You can be glad in God. Your circumstances may be in a sad state, but your Savior can bring a smile to your face. Salvation in Jesus is a joy, delight and privilege. Fear may have caused you to forget the free gift of eternal life extended to you by God’s grace, for gladness is its ambassador. I can’t help but be grateful when I think of the situations the Lord by His grace has led me through. The divorce of parents, feeling abandon, working three jobs simultaneously, marriage conflict, health issues, career upheaval, challenging children and financial disappointments, all were sad situations, but my Savior saw me through. You may find yourself in a sad state of affairs, but be glad because your King Jesus is still in control. The goodness of God is your gauge for being glad.

Our joy is in our Lord and King Jesus; we choose no lower delight. The religion of men remains dead in sin, sad and contingent on circumstances, we however serve with gladness a risen Savior who rules by grace and truth. Gladness comes when you go to God to govern your life. It is the Lord you look to when life is spinning out of control. Children of God are happy to be His. You can be glad your Maker made you for Himself. He wants you, He desires you, and He invites you into the joy of His presence. Time with Jesus in stillness and solitude generates joy in your soul. Your glad heart will make music, and sing praises to your King. You may find yourself dancing with the stars under the canopy of heaven. Sing the new song written on your heart by the Holy Spirit, and you will be glad in God. The Bible says, “Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs” (Psalm 100:2).
